SDM mast for freeride and performance sailing
Loftsails Vision IV C75 SDM combines the fast response of a high-carbon mast with the durability required for regular use. It is designed for recreational freeriders, performance-oriented windsurfers and riders using cambered sails.
The 75% carbon content reduces rig weight and provides faster reflex than a C50 mast. At the same time, the construction remains more durable and affordable than a full-carbon C100 competition model.
T700 and T800 carbon construction
The mast is made using a combination of T700 and T800 carbon fibres. These materials provide high elasticity, efficient recovery after flexing and resistance to the loads generated during acceleration and high-wind sailing.
Fast reflex helps the sail stabilise its profile after gusts and sudden load changes. The rig responds more quickly, making it easier to maintain drive, speed and control in choppy conditions.
Durable pre-preg laminate
Loftsails uses pre-preg technology, in which the fibres are pre-impregnated with a precisely controlled amount of resin. This results in a consistent laminate and reduces unnecessary excess material that would increase weight.
The construction is designed to withstand the loads generated by cambered sails. Its surface and laminate provide suitable resistance to friction caused by camber rotation and regular sail movement.
Standard SDM diameter
The SDM diameter provides high structural stiffness and stable support for the profiles of larger sails. It is particularly suitable for freerace, raceboard and other performance-oriented sails where a deep and stable draft is important.
The standard diameter also supports smooth operation of compatible cambers. This helps maintain predictable profile rotation during manoeuvres and stable sail behaviour at higher speeds.
Constant Curve bend profile
Loftsails Vision IV C75 SDM features a Constant Curve bend profile. Base flex is rated at 64%, while top flex is 76%, matching the bend characteristics required by compatible Loftsails sails.
A correctly matched mast allows the sail to achieve the intended draft depth and leech release. It also helps maintain a broad tuning range at both the downhaul and outhaul.
Consistent production quality
Loftsails uses precise manufacturing methods to reduce variation between individual masts. Every mast is checked for the specifications that affect its behaviour.
Consistent bend characteristics are useful not only for racers. They also make it easier for recreational riders to tune their sails according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and use the full intended wind range.
Balance between performance and durability
Vision IV C75 SDM is lighter and more responsive than entry-level masts with a lower carbon content. However, it is less sensitive and more affordable than a top-specification C100 model.
This makes it a practical choice for riders who want a responsive rig for regular sailing, training and frequent transport.

Loftsails mast manufacturing standards
Loftsails masts are manufactured using only the highest-grade materials and pre-preg (fiber cloth that’s pre-impregnated with resin) construction methods that are highly consistent for quality control and superior to traditional ‘wet’ layup processes that do no guarantee even resin transfer, strength and performance. Loftsails use superior T800 & T700 carbon fiber in their masts. T800 is the optimum fiber when under strain and elongation and compression and also delivers superior response action that enhances sails so well. T700 has even more superior resin absorption and consistency and in fact Loftsails leading Team Edition masts use both fabrics for the ultimate blend of quality and performance.

Accurate materials specifaction
The CAD plotter accurately cuts all composite raw materials used in the process. This is vital for consistency of weight control and performance.

Taking shape mandrels
The right mandrel for each model is then chosen so that the required taper, thickness, bend curve and many other characteristics specified for each model can be produced.

Layup and dressing
For confidentiality reasons we cannot show Loftsails’ precise, classified techniques used in the next stages. These steps involve rolling the plotted composite materials onto the mandrel with a closely guarded process on how the unique inner and compression layups are formed and secretive method for how the ferrules are integrated. The stickers are applied at this stage though!

Taping
External finishing such as protective basalt layers and durable finishing tape are applied to protect from camber wear, heat and impact.

Curing
The mast is cooked in an autoclave. It’s vital to closely monitor and precisely control the curation process at various stages for the most consistent results.

QC
Quality Control checks are made such as bend curve measurement, strength under load and impact. Final finishing inspections are then completed before packaging. Next stop – the beach!
