HYPERION 2021
HYPERION 178 - COMPETITION SLALOM FOIL - The brand new downwind slalom foil discipline is at the leading edge of the sport. Now with the lower slalom racing wind limit of 5-knots (very light), a delicate balance between power and a slippery ‘glisse’ feeling was key to finding the right slalom foil board to perform at a high level in a wide variety of conditions.
Ultra compact and reduced nose/tail width for reduced power (compared to the upwind designs) for higher crosswind top speeds combined with a very solid feeling of stability under the feet to gain those extra meters of advantage at full tilt. Excellent glide and acceleration in the air.
‘Gorilla Backfoot Pad’ – Fitted with a one piece 6mm deck pad from rail to rail on the back foot to facilitate comfort and grip during high speed gybe maneuvers.
‘Multi Strap Inserts’ – Loads of front and back strap insert options to really fine tune your racing stance in a wide variety of wind strengths and water conditions.
Developed with Maciek Rutkowski.
HYPERION 184 - COMPETITION RACE FOIL - Multiple PWA race winner, the Hyperion 184 has built a strong reputation on the racing circuit. The basic necessity to create high pointing angles upwind coupled with as much stability in the air as possible, whilst at the same time having a board that creates a high amount of lift, yet also cut the air cleanly and without high drag coefficients, this was not an easy ask!
The test result was clear. An ultra compact outline and super boxy rails the entire length of the rail helped greatly to steady the board in the air. High amounts of volume, especially in the nose, created an excellent platform for very low wind planing ability. This also created more usable power upwind to out point the fleet off the start line and also to have deep and low angles downwind, the key attributes required for success in current foil racing formats.
All-new ultra compact and ultra wide nose/tail shape for increased power and angle upwind combined with solid stability downwind. Excellent glide and acceleration in the air. Very early planing due to the clever volume distribution.
T-Beam style coned deck shape – Increases light wind power, drive, general stability and nose trim stability at high foiling speeds.
‘Downwind Dominator’ – Original deck recess area in the middle of the deck gybe area that increases the ability to pump deeper downwind in light wind and have more control overpowered. Fitted with a one piece 6mm deck pad from rail to rail to facilitate comfort and grip without having to fit subsequent footstraps that get in the way during foil gybes and tacks.
Stability and function, these are the highlight points of this all-new foil race board design. Plane in 4-5 knots of wind or power through the chop in 30-knots of wind, this board can handle any and all foil race conditions that you will likely encounter at any foil race event around the globe.
HYPERION 204 - COMPETITION FOIL RACE - The Hyperion 204 is a straight duplicate of the multiple PWA race and event winning Hyperion 184, but in a 100cm FW Class width. All the same features that are proven on the 184 are carried over to this 204 liter course racing thoroughbred.
More power over the foil due to the massive 99cm tail equates to higher pointing angles upwind and deeper downwind angles especially in under-powered conditions.

High-performance FW class upwind racing board for those sailors who want to perform at their very best.
Features
- Durepox Xtreme ® – America’s Cup grade ultra high-tech bottom paint finish currently used by Team NZ!
- Proven faster water and air release for that extra ‘slip’ = higher speeds.
- Harder and more durable than normal paint finishes.
- A windsurfing industry first. Taking it to the next level!
- Read about it here.
- All-new dedicated foil scoop-rocker line for easier handling, explosive acceleration and top-speed in both flat water and choppy slalom foiling conditions.
- Reverse Vee bottom shape – Generous vee and double concave configuration in the nose to clear the chop and create a smooth ride especially when touching the nose coming off the foil, transitioning to less vee and dc in the tail for easier tilting of the board angled to the side for earlier planing alongside better glide when touching.
- FOIL Tuttle Strong Box – Double the carbon content, double the wall strength and stiffness, double the width compared to a normal tuttle box, and built with a 100% high-density PVC sandwich body. The result – foils stay tight and the box holds the direct feeling performance even after prolonged use.
- T-Beam style coned deck shape (184, 204)
- ‘V3 Vector Cuts’ – All-new straight line cutout design that facilitates clean and effortless water release for ultra fast planing onto the foil
ABOUT FMX Racing
FMX Racing is born from a deep desire to design, shape, test and ultimately deliver world class products to the windsurfing market that racers and customers alike will remember forever.
Drawing from 11 World Titles & 32-years of competition, design and testing experience, Finian Maynard began his windsurfing board building career on Maui in 1992. Having learned his initial skill set as a young man directly from legendary #1 master shaper Jimmy Lewis, and working directly with racing industry legends Richard Greene and Phil McGain, yet more invaluable knowledge, experience and understanding was learned in the historical mecca of windsurfing – Haiku. This ultimately formed a solid base from which a highly successful career was formed.
