A totally new release from the Tabou stable in our hands. We're testing the Tabou Fifty!
Today we present to you with a complete novelty designed by Fabian Vollenweider, the Tabou Fifty which we had the opportunity to test recently!
We present you with a brand new collection of 2021 Tabou boards available in HERE. Along with it, we offer you a lot of interesting items that are worth to take a closer look at. The new Tabou collection includes old and well known designs, such as the legendary freeride Tabou Rocket and freewave board 3S. There are also boards for the WingFoil, a discipline that is being born before our eyes and after our last tests the boards have gained really cool reviews - but you will find out more about this next time. Today we present to you with a complete novelty designed by Fabian Vollenweider, i.e. the Tabou Fifty which we had the opportunity to test recently! In recent years, there has been a clear increase in interest in foil surfing, both abroad and in our home spots. Foiling made it possible to go windsurfing even in more unfavourable wind conditions and thus, we it allowed us to enjoy this sport more often than even before. Unfortunately, a number of boards designed strictly for windfoiling is not doing well with guiding the board with a fin and on the other hand, typical fin boards, the so-called Foil Ready boards do not offer maximum pleasure from levitation. Fabian Vollenweinder set himself a very difficult task of creating a board that is ideal for both freeride surfing with a fin in higher winds and less wind on foil. The Tabou Fifty is up to this task.
Why is it called Fifty? Well, the assumption is simple:
50% Foil + 50% Fin = 100% WINDSURF PERFORMANCE
And so we have a board which at a first glance resembles the legendary Rocket PLUS in its design which has already sparked our interest, because we like and value the Rocket very much. At the beginning, we attach the MFC 40 HF RIDE Carbon fin included in the kit. Just to clarify, the Fifty can be purchased in 2 technologies:
- TEAM – light and strong carbon design with MFC 40 HF RIDE Carbon fin included.
- LTD – strong and lightweight fiberglass sandwich PBC design with MFC 40 HF RIDE fin included.
Our first impression on water was very positive. The Tabou Fifty 125 Team turned out to be a very nice, relatively easy free -ride/-race board. With its large width and bottom structure, the board practically glides on its own, without much effort on surfer’s part.
Even heavier people didn't need to pump the sail to start flying on the foil. Not to mention that the Fifty turned out to be easy to surf on even in a large chop. It slides on water ideally due to its Double V-Concave in the front part of the board which extends towards a more flattened single concave at the stern. The high-class MFC 40 HF RIDE Carbon fin additionally increases the comfort of planing the board. The maximum speed of the Fifty will give you a lot of fun while crossing the water basin along a straight line, but it is not as high as the already mentioned Rocket+. Gybing was quite easy thanks to the high volume at the stern, the Fifty gybes nicely and calmly along a slightly wider curve. The Fifty also has enough front for the less advanced surfer to be able to cope with tacking. Generally, we were positively surprised by the Fifty as a freeride board with a wind of 15-25 knots and in a large chop.
We performed our tests with the foil by mounting the GA-FOILS HYBRID 1200 designed for freeride under the board. The board is easy to lift above the water surface thanks to the increased volume at the stern, but also in combination with Gaastra's ingenious freeride hydro wing floating above the water is easy to stabilise. The footstraps are more edge-oriented combined with a more rounded side, they give you a sense of control in the air. It is definitely an ideal solution for people starting their adventure with the foil, but it will also offer satisfying performance to those looking for something more.
To sum up, the Tabou Fifty is a great solution for those who need a single freeride board with a fin and a foil. It is perfect as the first smaller freerace and foil board for your first experience with levitation. It is also advanced enough and gives a great possibility to develop at an intermediate level which makes it a great proposition for more advanced surfers. Generally, with the new Tabou Fifty new MFC HF RIDE fin plus GA-FOILS HYBRID 1200cm2, you will be able to windsurf almost every day.
