Duotone's most successful 5-batten sail ever is back! Bringing back the legendary DUKE was a daunting task that took over 1,5 years of intense development. At DUOTONE, you, the final user is always at the center of development. Therefore, especially with the new DUKE it wouldn’t have made sense to “just” rely on team rider input and feedback. As a starting point Duotone involved “real” end-consumers who use these kinds of sails regularly and surf centers to define a bucket list for the new DUKE. And here is the outcome and how designers went about it:
Maximum wind range, especially in variable conditions and/or very gusty winds
This is the most important factor and the major advantage when going for a 5-batten handling sail. As a simple rule, more battens give you more control and a bigger wind range. Usually this has a negative effect on the low end power as more battens make it harder for the wind to inflate the sail, and it becomes less efficient for pumping. Therefore, Duotone have incorporated the BATTEN FREE CENTER concept from the SUPER_HERO. Instead of the usual even batten distribution, the DUKE features a bigger gap between the foot batten and the batten above the boom. This makes the boom area easier to inflate plus increases the stability in the top (due to the increased batten density in this area). The second downside is that every batten increases the weight of the sail. That’s the reason why there was a trend towards fewer battens for wave sails in the past years.
Superlight feeling in your hands but without falling apart after 1-2 seasons
The reduced weight of 4-batten sails was the major reason for the disappearance of the 5-batten sails in the past decade. Fortunately, designers have made some major construction improvements over the last 10 years. The outcome of this development was the LIGHT DONE RIGHT CONSTRUCTION which got introduced in 2022. By replacing the usual multilayer reinforcements with a single layer of high-quality fabric and introducing the ONE PIECE SLEEVE Duotone were able to reduce the overall weight by 300g. Most important Duotone is the only brand out there where these weight savings have been achieved without reducing the thickness of the film and XPly panels. Only this way Duotone can still guarantee their unmatched 5 year warranty.
Another issue when reducing the film thickness is that the sail becomes spongy as the energy fizzles out in the increased elongation. This leads to the sail feeling heavier in your hands.
So in contrary to others Duotone sails are not just lighter on the scale but especially in your hands on the water when you use them. Cause this is where it really counts!
Maximum range of use
One of the greatest assets of the DUKE is its versatility. It’s a joy in bump & jump conditions on your freewave board, or as a smaller sail for blasting around on your freeride board. The forward/up draft position makes it also very capable for classic and even new school freestyle tricks. And last but not least it’s a great sail for medium wave and/or jumping conditions, especially in gusty or challenging wind conditions. So, the new DUKE is a real all-round high performance contender, challenging any handling sail out there.
Straight forward and fast to rig
With all the features, markers and hints Duotone have developed over the past 40 years, it’s safe to say that there is no other sail which is faster or more precise to rig than a DUOTONE sail. This means even if you aren’t a pro who is rigging and trimming their sail every day you will still achieve the same correct trim. As only with the correct trim can you unlock 100% of the sail’s performance.
Similar feeling than your bigger Freeride/Performance sails
Another important factor is that all the sails in your quiver should have a similar feeling/behavior. This even counts for professionals, as it usually takes even them a full day to get used and adjust their style to a sail which feels very different. The major reason why sails feel different is the position of the draft in the sail. Fortunately, also here, the DUKE has got you covered as it features a similar draft position to the vast majority of all modern freeride sails.
Finally, the new DUKE comes in 2 optional constructions:
The regular DUKE features a 50% monofilm construction with all high load areas (foot, clew, top, luff) being beefed up with XPly.
The DUKE HD though is made entirely out of XPly to give you that extra peace of mind.
In addition, this particular sail features a second lower foil-specific clew eyelet, extending the range of use even further.

Product highlights
Draft Forward
Forward draft turns power off and goes completely neutral during manoeuvres >> results in a much higher success rate
Batten Free Center
Larger gap between the foot batten and the batten above the boom >> better inflation (= planing power) in the boom area and improved stability in the upper sail area
LIGHT DONE RIGHT Construction
Weight reduction of a clearly noticeable 200 to 300 g without reducing the thickness of the main panel thus maintaining the well-known durability and longevity!
Super neutral in maneuvers
To make tricks and turns as easy as possible the sail should go completely neutral during maneuvers. Therefore, the DUKE comes with a more forward oriented draft position. The forward draft turns the power off and goes completely neutral as soon as you sheet out or shift the sail. This results in a much higher success rate in maneuvers
Early planing power even without excessive pumping
To achieve maximum planing power, the DUKE features a high draft distribution combined with a deep profile which helps lifting the board onto the plane
Good lift with maximum control for jumping
The higher draft position also increases your airtime as it generates lift, while the more forward oriented draft position helps you to always remain in control
Features

3D Top Cap
Optimised pull. On regular top caps and pin systems, the webbing is connected in a “one-dimensional” way with the sail body (either side to side or front to back), which transfers the downhaul tension only in certain points. The 3D TOP CAP allows a “three-dimensional” and very widespread transition of the downhaul forces into the sail body. This eliminates top fluttering and ensures a progressive loose leech, extending the wind range. The integrated abrasion ribs eliminate the need for heavy, bulky reinforcements at the end of the luff sleeve

Set & Go Vario Top
No more trial and error when trying to find the best vario top setting. Even when first rigging up, the correct length of the vario top is found straight away. Clear length indicators mark out the perfect setting with reference to the mast length used, eliminating any need for testing or re-adjustments

Polyester Webbing Only
Eliminating stretch and loss of tension. If it’s good enough for safety harnesses, it’s good enough for windsurfers! Duotone is the only manufacturer to use only polyester webbing for the (vario) top and the tack roller. This advantage of this compared to conventional polypropylene is the negligible amount of stretch. As a result, even brand-new sails will retain full luff tension and will not need subsequent trimming

Double D Buckle
Inspired by high-strength climbing harnesses and Formula 1 helmets. The exclusive, two-part metal double-D buckle on the vario top, which replaces traditional solutions. This design guarantees the best trimming characteristics and eliminates all webbing slippage

One Piece Sleeve
No more seam at the leading edge > 80 g lower weight > no hard spot through overlapping panels improves elasticity at the leading edge

Double Seam Technology
Double the durability with half as much stretch. DUOTONE manufactures products of unmatched quality, which gives our sails a significantly longer lifetime. A key feature which helps to achieve this is the triple-stitch zig-zag seams. Unlike other products with their single-seam design, these are double-seam. They cover all exposed crash areas, which increases tear resistance and reduces bending-elongation by up to 50%, boosting profile stability and performance

VTS - Visual Trim System
Perfect trim and a huge range of use. You won’t find a quicker or more accurate way of trimming your sail. Even beginners can trim the sail in a matter of seconds to 100% accuracy. All you need to do is pull the luff until the top of the loose leech reaches the “lower wind limit” or “upper wind limit”. The VTS acts as a power boost, ensuring maximum performance and broader range of use

IRocket 2.0
Super-lightweight and aerodynamic. An inconspicuous detail with a massive impact. iROCKET 2.0 batten tensioners are super-lightweight, aerodynamic and highly stable, consisting of high-quality components such as a self-lubricating, salt-water-resistant brass nut with stainless-steel screw which can withstand all batten tensions. Furthermore, the iROCKET 2.0 is an essential component for a true windsurfing revolution. 100% correct batten tension, correctly adjusted when purchased and forever after

Epoxy Batten
Extremely stable, extremely break-resistant. Depending on the range of use, positioning in the sail and the necessary tension, the batten stress is enormous. In order to prevent breakages, the Duotone only fit into all solid battens extremely durable epoxy laminates which really can withstand anything and can live up to DUOTONE’s promises in terms of longevity

Mini Batten
These prevent unwanted leech flutter. Short and highly effective mini-battens which provide support for the areas between the battens and prevent undesirable flutter

XPly Plus
The Duotone use only 150 or 100 micron thick films for their exclusive XPLY PLUS. In an extensive series of tests, they have developed the ideal combination of necessary film thickness and number of threads. The X.PLY PLUS in particular, at 150 microns in thickness, boasts durability characteristics far in excess of previous laminates at minimal weight

Sleeve Opener
Frictionless insertion of the mast into the luff sleeve. An ingenious solution does away with the tedium of inserting the mast. The DUOTONE logo above the boom cutout gently opens the sleeve so that the mast can be threaded with one hand into the luff friction-free, without having to constantly make adjustments to the luff

Triple Tack Roller 3.0
Find the perfect trim with minimal effort. The integrated, nickel-plated brass triple roller minimizes the downhaul forces tremendously

Individual Boom Length Indication
The correct boom length without the need for trial and error. Because the boom is attached to the mast at different heights depending on body size, and because this creates a different angle to the mast, the boom length will vary. Specific recommendations for the correct length are printed directly on the luff sleeve at the boom level

HTS 2.0 Harnessline Trim System
Never position your harness lines incorrectly again. Do away with the tedium of adjusting to the optimum rope position, as well as the numb forearms and the endless fiddling around. The patented print on the sail shows exactly where the center of the harness line has to be. All you need to do is position the two ends symmetrically at the left and right of the print

VTS Tail Outhaul Specs
Each sail carries individually defined visual indications for the correct outhaul extension (requires VTS TAIL boom)

Duratech Foot
Long-term guarantee for the sail foot. When starting off on the water or catching up, the foot of the sail is constantly dragged over the nonslip coating, particularly for wide boards. With the exclusive DURATECH FOOT, the seams are completely protected within a large plastic channel so that the surface cannot chafe against seams and material

Twin Strap
This keeps the sail rolled up and holds the protector to the mast. A brilliantly simple fastening system which keeps the sail compact and closed after being rolled up and, when on the water, holds the mast protector closely to the mast

Dura Luff Patch
Extremely stable luff reinforcement. The area around the boom cutout is exposed to extreme wear and tear, as the luff panel gets folded when inserting and pulling out the mast. This “accordion effect” can lead to tears in the monofilm after a while. The flexible DURA LUFF PATCH reinforces this area, making for a soft transition into the monofilm to avoid film brakage

IBumper Incl. VTS Slot
A real innovation that offers additional value is the new iBUMPER 2.0, since in addition to its function as a lightweight and reliable mast protector, it is also useful as a trimming tool. After stretching on a new sail, the best indicator for optimum trim is the position of the mast end at the height of the protector. For this reason, the new iBumpur now has a vinyl viewing window so that the lower edge of the mast ca be identified
